Here is your chance to take a stab at balancing the budget yourself. Next 10 is a non-partisan, non profit organization whose aim is to teach citizens to start thinking critically about their state, now and for the future.

Take the Challenge and prove to the Governor, cuts on children and the poorest members of our community are not the answer.

Tell him Oil Companies and for profit Corporations, must pay their fair share.

The Reprecussions:

$9 billion cut from public schools, colleges and universities

$4.3 billion taken from cities and counties

$1.4 billion cut from law enforcement and prisons

$1.3 billion cut from Medic-Cal

$1 billion cut from transportation

$500 million cut from CalWorks and welfare programs

$225 million cut from home health aid workers

$124 million from Healthy Families children's insurance

Unspecified billions cut by reducing state, county, city, and court services through furlough programs and closure of state parks and beaches.

$2.1 billion in additional borrowing, and a few fancy accounting tricks.

$100 million by opening up new offshore drilling off the coast of the Santa Barbara. Schwarzenegger rejected an oil severance tax, which would have brought in over $1 billion a year for existing drilling rights.

$0 in additional revenue from big business, big oil, or big tobacco.
